Overy mill

Rear of Overy mill

Overy Mill was one of three mills in Dorchester and probably dates back to the eighth century. It was still working in the mid-nineteenth century. The public footpath passes the attractive mill-pool. This old water-colour shows the upstream aspect of the mill and the mill-race.

In spring, there are striking views of the Abbey across the meadow.  The Hurst water meadow and Overy mill were part of the Abbey estate from about the eighth century, until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536.
